Revenants
A downloadable game
Revenants is a solo or co-op grim fantasy TTRPG about rightful vengeance. You create one or more characters and a Traitor through a few dice rolls, then embark on a hex-crawl and point-crawl journey of retribution.
Characters are created quickly, with only hints of their background and perhaps a weapon (and a curse). If they survive long enough, there will be time to flesh out their stories. Though these characters may die, their Community endures, and the hunt for their Traitor continues.
The game blends two distinct styles: a rules-light narrative approach and crunchy tactical combat, allowing players to adjust the balance between them to suit their preferred experience.
This game assumes familiarity with TTRPGs and does not provide introductory explanations or general guidance for players or game masters.
Although designed for solo or co-op play, its modular structure also supports a traditional director + players setup.
The game is designed to be used with the following three zines, but use what you prefer:
- Revenants (core zine): Contains the core rules, including character and Traitor creation. On its own, it can be used to run OSR-style modules with minimal adjustment.
- Revenants: Player Archetypes: Adds depth and additional mechanical options for player characters. Archetypes are also hints about the setting. Include it for more crunch and build variety, or omit it for a lighter experience. (to be released on April 05)
- Revenants: Enemies & Procedures: Defines the core gameplay loop and provides tools to generate encounters, enemies, allies, and progression. (to be released on April 12)
Game and setting influences:
- Kill Bill (2003-2004).
- MÖRK BORG, by Stockholm Kartell (in particular its solo rules: Sölitary Defilement).
- Dark Souls/Elden Ring, by Fromsoft
- World of Dungeons, by John Harper.
- Into the Odd, by Chris McDowall.
- Warhammer Quest: Cursed City, by Games Workshop
Number of players: 1 or 2-4 Length: 1-3 hours per game session Page Count: 20
Cover and interior art:
- Monstrous Managerie by Tania Herrero.
- Fantasy Illustration Pack 01, by Hounskull.
